Australia Zip Code
Zip codes have become a worldwide way to locate a place. Every town/city can be allotted a unique zip code within a country which can help the country´s postal department to determine the location of the letter.
The format for a zip code is not fixed or limited. A country can choose for itself that which format suites their needs and requirements. However mostly the English alphabets and numerical digits are used. Australia has a four (4) digit code which can be within 0 to 9. Any combination of four using these ten digits can be made.
These postcodes or zip codes were introduced by the post master´s general (PMS) Australia in the year 1967. Before the numeric 4 digit codes, only two character codes containing an alphabet and a digit like N3, E5 or any other with similar patterns.
Usage of zip codes has proved very helpful for the postal department and many more mails and packages can now be handled with more relative ease. Mostly one postcode is used for only one location but some postcodes maybe used for multiple areas. This mostly happens when the populations of the specific areas are less enough to use one code for them. Some areas may have as little population as a few thousand and assigning a dedicated postcode to them may not be a wise move because some other nearby small towns and suburbs can also be covered by the same code.
There are also modern machines that read the postcodes written on the envelope and automatically place them in the appropriate compartment from where the concerned official can pick them up for delivery. In order to use this service, Australia has issued envelopes that have four orange boxes for the post code and one digit is written in each box. The machine can read these numbers to sort the envelopes. If these letters were to be sorted manually and not by machine, then it is most likely that the time consumed would have been much higher than the present.
It may not be easy for a machine to sort the letters by using the address stated on the envelopes and might be a very difficult task for it if not completely impossible. But identifying digits which are pre defined for each place are easier to manage and the machine is more likely to know that this four digit code means a letter belonging to that specific compartment or container.
